Studio Brief 01 - Design Studios in Singapore

Being from Singapore, it would be good idea to find the design studios that appeal to my interest in effort to maybe get a placement while over there.

DO NOT DESIGN Studios

DO NOT DESIGN are a creative consultancy that focuses on "creating experiences and strategically-led campaigns and content to drive consumer engagement and awareness across the areas of print, web and spaces". Their aims of the experience are to inspire and motive clients as well as engage with the audience. They have interests in not only design but in art, installation, performance and fashion. From their range of projects, the one that interests me the most is their DEAR magazine.

DEAR magazine includes visual essays and contributions by a diverse range of artists, coupled with a sparse, pared-back layout bookended by the zine’s unique cut-out cover. DEAR looks set to mark the start of an eclectic, and new chapter for zines created in Singapore. In some ways the unorthodox physical construction of the magazine is reminiscent of WERK magazine also found in Singapore.

Anonymous Studio

Anonymous is a multidisciplinary studio based in Singapore, providing Creative Direction, Content and Design. The studio's design philosophy of simple, elegant and innovative solutions have been internationally recognised with awards from the British Design & Art Direction, Art Directors Club New York, Hong Kong Design Association and the Creative Circle Awards.

What interested me was their work on the art direction for the Dior And I screening in Singapore. The documentary is used as a source for information for my OUGD404 Studio Brief 02 design and it was surprising to not only see it screened in Singapore but also the extent of which they branded the affair. From the unique to Anonymous ticket design to the purchasable tote bags.

Despite the fact I may be leaning towards a smaller design studio to intern at, it would be beneficial to have experience at a design studio like Anonymous that creates work for a range of areas as well as a studio that has many accolades.

Roots Studio

Roots is an interdisciplinary graphic design studio based in Singapore. They work across the field of branding, print, interactive, spatial and art. Even though I am trying to stray away from the typical clean flat aesthetic, it would be interesting to see how a design studio creates their design based on the trends today.

Underscore Magazine of HJHER Studio

Underscore is magazine made under Justin Long and Jerry Goh of Singapore-based multi-disciplinary Hjgher Studio.

Each issue of the magazine builds upon philosophical and reflective ideas around a theme. They also publish U Paper, an international series of arts/culture-based broadsheet publications and U-Symposium, the first independent magazine event in Singapore. HJGHER is a creative consultancy with specialised backgrounds in design and behavioural science with a primary focus on Design Psychology.

WORK Pte Ltd is a design studio that is headed by Creative Director, Theseus Chan of WERK magazine. It was started up to have the freedom to create work that is purposeful and uniquely different. They seek collaborations with people who are keen and willing to explore paths that are not usually taken and have worked with clientele such as Club 21, HERMÉS, Selfridges, Louis Vuitton (Japan) and other renowned international boutiques and design firms. Their approach is to find new ways to create work with the objective that it continues to evolve once set in motion.
