Took a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park to get a glimpse of Brian Donnelly's (KAWS) first ever UK exhibition. It showcases work ranging from his paintings to his larger than life sculptures. The selection from the contemporary artist contrasts against the work of Anthony Caro, Henry Moore and others around the park. Donnelly's work incorporates brighter colours, softer forms and most noticeably a modern take what sculptures are. Where Moore and Caro's work are more subtle in their messages and abstract in their forms, Donnelly is more blatant in his message through the sculptures poses and references to pop culture. Furthermore they are made out of plastic and wood, unlike Caro and Moore's traditional metal works. This exhibition gives the audience an idea of how far Donnelly has come from the days of making toys.
Took a visit to The Hepworth Wakefield whilst in the area after YSP. Wasn't familiar with Hepworth's work prior to visiting and was pleasantly surprised at the range of work showcased. Her work is definitely recognisable from her consistent use of rounded forms and holes within. Her work exemplifies Modernism and in particular modern sculpture and was one of the few women artists to achieve international
prominence.
