Identifying professionals

Professionals and/or studios I would like to contact
  • Theseus Chan of WORK
  • Hamish Muir and/or Paul McNeil of MuirMcNeil
  • Joerg Koch or any member of 032c
  • Daniel Arsham
  • Studio Yukiko
  • Julien Boudet
  • Studio ps.2 arquitetura + design
  • Bureau Borsche
  • Nguan
  • Josiah Craven
Theseus Chan has previously been contacted before through email with surprisingly fast responses. Contacting him again would help build a conversation between us and give me an opportunity to ask more detailed questions about his work and the art/design scene in Singapore.

MuirMcNeil are both renowned designers who I predict will be hard to get in contact with.
Looking at their website however, they have accounts on multiple social media sites. This would probably mean they're active in the community and are engaging with the public on current trends in design. Their multiple options for contact are beneficial.

032c team on front cover of Berlin Fashion Week magazine

Interviewing any member of 032c would be good whilst in Berlin, having a one to one conversation would change up the usual electronic conversations. Being that the magazine now has received more and more exposure, finding time for an interview would probably be hard to fit in, especially since Berlin fashion week is happening close to the dates of being there as well. Rather than seeing that as a disadvantage however, this could be the main topic of the conversations. What their role in the fashion week was and whether this marks more exposure for Berlin in their magazines for example.

Daniel Arsham is not a designer, but an artist that is significant in my appreciation for installation art and contemporary art as a whole. What is interesting about his work is that it is informed by his own limitations. Because he is colour blind, almost of his work created in greyscale. Despite this it has not hindered him as over time, the colour scheme has become an identifier for his pieces. However he has started to explore colour in his most recent work, which is interesting to see given his altered perception of how we view colour.

Instagram is a likely way to get in contact with Arsham. He frequents the social media platform with daily stories.

Studio Yukiko represent my interest in experimental design for magazines. They have been contacted before however emails are proving to be a ineffective way of getting their attention. Being that they produce editorial content, sending them a demonstration of my editorial interests would be a better way to connect with them. Being based in Berlin, visiting their studio is an opportunity to better understand their design process.

Julien Boudet is a photographer that works predominantly with fashion and occasionally architecture. The choice to interview him is purely based on my interest in his photography style and coverage of the fashion world. But Boudet does not photograph runway shows, rather the people that attend them. His frequent activity on instagram means this could be a way to get in contact. Interviewing him would be beneficial in understanding what working in line with fashion is like. Furthermore, there could be an opportunity to collaborate with Boudet to use his photography in creating a bespoke zine.

ps.2 arquitetura + design are a large studio currently in Brazil. What separates ps.2 from the others in this selection of designers and studios is that they work on more commercial briefs. Branding for museums, design festivals and urban projects. Interviewing them would be interesting to see if Brazil itself has influenced their graphic design practice since most from the list are European.

Bureau Borsche are a recently discovered studio that has experience in editorial and type design. My questions for them would be based on the unconventional type choices they use for their solutions.

Nguan is a Singaporean photographer who's work I have been a fan of for a while. His style is unlike any photographer in Singapore and has the ability to capture the sense of longing in his photos. Nguan photographs a perspective of Singapore that rarely people imagine.

Apart from simply contacting them to conduct an interview, I plan on sending these studios and designers an example of my work to demonstrate who I am as a designer. The editorial being last years publication design module that has been condensed and refined to a more succinct visual artefact. Sending them this would be more of a gesture and would probably take their attention as opposed to simply email. It can also become a talking point in the interview.
